     Origin of Christmas and the meaning of the celebration

     O Natal é uma data em que comemoramos o nascimento de Jesus Cristo. Na antiguidade, o Natal era comemorado em várias datas diferentes, pois não se sabia com exatidão a data do nascimento de Jesus. Foi somente no século IV que o 25 de dezembro foi estabelecido como data oficial de comemoração. Na Roma Antiga, o 25 de dezembro era a data em que os romanos comemoravam o início do inverno. Portanto, acredita-se que haja uma relação deste fato com a oficialização da comemoração do Natal.
       Christmas is a time when we commemorate the birth of Jesus Christ. In ancient times, Christmas was celebrated in several different dates because they did not know the exact date of Jesus' birth. It was only in the fourth century that December 25 was established as the official date of commemoration. In ancient Rome, December 25 was the date on which the Romans commemorated the beginning of winter. Therefore, it is believed that there is a relationship of this fact with the official celebration of Christmas
      As antigas comemorações de Natal costumavam durar até 12 dias, pois este foi o tempo que levou para os três reis Magos chegarem até a cidade de Belém e entregarem os presentes (ouro, mirra e incenso) ao menino Jesus. Atualmente, as pessoas costumam montar as árvores e outras decorações natalinas no começo de dezembro e desmontá-las até 12 dias após o Natal.
      The old Christmas celebrations used to last up to 12 days because this was the time it took to reach the three Magi to the city of Bethlehem and deliver the gifts (gold, frankincense and myrrh) to the infant Jesus. Nowadays, people often build trees and other Christmas decorations in early December and dismantle them until 12 days after Christmas.      Do ponto de vista cronológico, o Natal é uma data de grande importância para o Ocidente, pois marca o ano 1 da nossa História.
      From the chronological point of view, Christmas is a time of great importance to the West, as it marks the first years of our history.       
       
      A Árvore de Natal e o Presépio

       Em quase todos os países do mundo, as pessoas montam árvores de Natal para decorar casas e outros ambientes. Em conjunto com as decorações natalinas, as árvores proporcionam um clima especial neste período.
      In almost every country in the world, people assemble Christmas trees to decorate homes and environments. In conjunction with the Christmas decorations, trees provide a special atmosphere in this period.
      Acredita-se que esta tradição começou em 1530, na Alemanha, com Martinho Lutero. Certa noite, enquanto caminhava pela floresta, Lutero ficou impressionado com a beleza dos pinheiros cobertos de neve. As estrelas do céu ajudaram a compor a imagem que Lutero reproduziu com galhos de árvore em sua casa. Além das estrelas, algodão e outros enfeites, ele utilizou velas acesas para mostrar aos seus familiares a bela cena que havia presenciado na floresta.
       It is believed that this tradition began in 1530 in Germany with Martin Luther. One night, while walking through the forest, Luther was impressed with the beauty of snow-covered pines. The stars of heaven helped to compose the image that Luther played with tree branches in your home. Beyond the stars, cotton and whatnot, he used candles to show his family the beautiful scene that was witnessed in the forest.      Esta tradição foi trazida para o continente americano por alguns alemães, que vieram morar na América durante o período colonial. No Brasil, país de maioria cristã, as árvores de Natal estão presentes em diversos lugares, pois, além de decorar, simbolizam alegria, paz e esperança.
      This tradition was brought to the Americas by some Germans who came to live in America during the colonial period. In Brazil, the majority Christian, Christmas trees are present in several places, because in addition to decorating, symbolize joy, peace and hope.      
         O presépio também representa uma importante decoração natalina. Ele mostra o cenário do nascimento de Jesus, ou seja, uma manjedoura, os animais, os reis Magos e os pais do menino. Esta tradição de montar presépios teve início com São Francisco de Assis, no século XIII. As músicas de Natal também fazem parte desta linda festa.
        The crib also represents an important Christmas decoration. It shows the scene of Jesus' birth, or a manger, animals, the Magi and the boy's parents. This tradition began to assemble cribs with St. Francis of Assisi in the thirteenth century. The Christmas songs are also part of this wonderful party.
