Luiz Gonzaga nasceu em Exu, Pernambuco, em 13 de dezembro de 1912. Foi um compositor popular. Aprendeu a ter gosto pela música ouvindo as apresentações de músicos nordestinos em feiras e em festas religiosas.

Quando migrou para o sul, fez de tudo um pouco, inclusive tocar em bares de beira de cais. Mas foi exatamente aí que ouviu um cabra lhe dizer para começar a tocar aquelas músicas boas do distante nordeste. Pensando nisso compôs dois chamegos: "Pés de Serra" e "Vira e Mexe".

Sabendo que o rádio era o melhor vínculo de divulgação musical daquela época (corria o ano de 1941) resolveu participar do concurso de calouros de Ary Barroso onde solou sua música “ Vira e Mexe” e ganhou o primeiro prêmio. Isso abriu caminho para que pudesse vir a ser contratado pela emissora Nacional.
