 A ( um,uma) or An (um,uma).


        We use in English A ( um,ama)  before consonant and An ( um,ama) before vowel:

Use a or an before singular nouns.

1. Use an before words beginning with vowels  (a, e, i, o,u).

   For example, say:

an axe (um ferimento)          an igloo (uma casa temporária)

an egg (um ovo)                   an orange (uma laranja)

an envelope(um envelope)   an umbrella (um guarda-chuva)

an ice cream (um sorvete)          an uncle (um tio)

2. But some words don’t follow this rule. For example,

use a (not an) before these words that begin with u:

a uniform (um uniforme)  a university (uma universidade)

3 Use a before words beginning with the other

letters of the alphabet, called consonants.

For example, say:

a basket (um cesto)         a rainbow (um arco-íris)

a bowl (uma bacia)         a monster (um monstro)

a car (um carro)              a pillow (um travesseiro)

a hill (uma colina)            a watch (um relógio)

a house (uma casa)        a zoo (um zoológico)

4. But some words don’t follow this rule. For example,

use an (not a) before these words that begin with h:

an heir (um herdeiro)

an honor (uma honra)

an hour (uma hora)
